The Lord is with you\u201d to announce the coming of the Messiah. &nbsp;Gabriel\u2019s message to Mary announces that God, himself, is entering human history through the Incarnation. This is a profound source of hope: humanity is not abandoned but visited and redeemed.&nbsp; Mary\u2019s affirmative response shows that trust in God can transform fear into courage. Her faith models how hope can flourish even when the future is uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary, betrothed to a young man named Joseph, lived in Nazareth, an insignificant village in Israel never mentioned in the Old Testament. Obviously, God chose this impoverished village to show that salvation would begin among the impoverished, overlooked and marginalized elements of society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Annunciation points toward the Cross and Resurrection. While Christmas celebrates Christ\u2019s birth, the true hope lies in the salvation he accomplished at Calvary for all mankind. The Annunciation is the seed of that promise. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Annunciation reminds believers that hope is not passive optimism but active trust in God\u2019s plan. Mary\u2019s \u201cyes\u201d demonstrates that hope requires courage, humility, and openness to grace. \u00a0For Christians, this event is a sign that God\u2019s promises are reliable, that he works through ordinary people, and that his presence brings light into the darkest places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The marvel of this wondrous virgin Mother of God is not only what we understand from scripture, but from what she has shared with us in the 43 reported apparitions that have occurred over the centuries.\u00a0 Included in those is one to a peasant named Juan Diego on December 9, 1531.\u00a0 Was Juan Diego\u2019s surprise and disbelief at that first apparition similar to her own \u201cgreatly troubling\u201d encounter with the angel?\u00a0 Yet young Juan Diego, like Mary, said yes to the message that she gave him.\u00a0 When Juan Diego, attending to his mortally ill uncle, missed the planned 4<sup>o<\/sup> apparition with Mary by diverting his route three days later, on December 12, she intercepted him on his detour.\u00a0 After explaining his reasoning for the deviation, Mary gently chided him, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill-element has-palette-color-38-background-color has-background\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 32%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(16.293px, 1.018rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.68), 25px);\">\u201cAm I not here, I who am your mother?\u201d\u00a0 What an encouraging and hopeful message.\u00a0 Juan Diego\u2019s uncle was healed, the Basilica that she had asked for was built, and is now the most visited Catholic shrine in the world, \u201cOur Lady of Guadalupe\u201d has been named the Patroness of the America\u2019s and of the unborn, and Juan Diego was canonized on July 31, 2002, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City by Pope John Paul II.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"146\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dec-12b-146x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9918 size-medium\" style=\"object-position:50% 50%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dec-12b-146x300.jpg 146w, https:\/\/passionist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dec-12b.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dearest Mother Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, inspire us to say \u201cyes\u201d to God\u2019s holy will as you and so many others have done over the centuries.
