Holding Our Loved Ones in Prayer on All Souls’ Day

Fr. Mike Higgins, CP, invites us to remember our departed loved ones with gratitude, find comfort in Christ’s love and share their names for prayer this November.

Some memories come to us in the simplest ways: a familiar song, a favorite recipe or a story that still makes us smile. In those moments, we feel again how deeply our loved ones have shaped our lives.

As we celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day, this Día de los Muertos altar invites us to remember loved ones who have died, give thanks for their lives and entrust them to God’s eternal care.

On November 2, All Souls’ Day, we bring those memories to prayer. We remember people whose deaths are still painfully recent and those we have missed for many years. Each name holds a story. Each life remains part of our own.

Our faith makes room for both gratitude and tears. Jesus himself wept at the death of his friend Lazarus. He knows the sorrow of losing someone we love, and he meets us there with compassion.

As Passionists, we find comfort in the love revealed through Jesus’ Cross and Resurrection. We entrust our departed loved ones to that same love, trusting in God’s mercy and the promise of eternal life.

This November, I invite you to share the names of those you would like us to remember in prayer. Let us also remember one another, especially those carrying their grief quietly.

May God grant peace to our beloved departed and comfort to all who miss them.
