Lent is not merely a season of external religious practices, but a sacred time to renew our hearts.

“Tell me what you love, and I’ll tell you what will become of you.” It’s all really pretty simple.

Christianity does not claim that suffering is good, but it does teach that we can make our suffering productive of good.

If our perception of the “other” is causing us to sin, we need to throw it away no matter how attached we are to it, and listen to what Jesus says!

This Lent, let us look at what is in front of us and finally choose the real thing.

Before we can speak plainly, we must listen. Before we listen, we must desire to really hear the voice of Jesus speak to our hearts.

Jesus will always be there for us if we are faithful and trust in his infinite love and mercy. 

Evil things come from within, from the heart, Jesus tells the crowd. His point is that we have a responsibility to nurture godly matters of the heart, rather than evil things.

Liturgy, our prayers, and our obedience are important, absolutely, but they are not the ultimate point. They are the means by which we are fed so we can enter into something deeper, enabling us to bring in the outcast, feed the hungry, defend the powerless, stand against injustice, and live as Jesus did.

The two days before Ash Wednesday we will read the beginning of the Letter of James, ‘…the sun withers the flower, its beauty perishes, so the way of the rich, they will wither away. (James 1:11).
