Yet, how often do we focus our attentions on the things of the world and place our priorities on the temporal while ignoring the eternal?

Reflection

Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

John 17:3

In today’s Gospel, we have the beginning of what is known as Christ’s High Priestly Prayer. This is the prayer that Jesus directs to the Father just before He goes to His Passion. In this prayer, Our Lord shares the deepest desires of His heart for His people, those whom He has called to believe in Him and be His Church. He tells us what it is to possess eternal life…simply to believe in the Father and that He is truly the Son. It sounds so easy. Just believe, and we will have life everlasting

Yet, how often do we focus our attentions on the things of the world and place our priorities on the temporal while ignoring the eternal? We claim we believe in the Christian faith, but often our actions belie this belief. If we truly believe that Christ is Lord, if we truly believe that the Father wants to be in intimate relationship with us, shouldn’t we pursue that relationship above all others? Shouldn’t our trust in Almighty God supersede all worldly concerns?

Jesus prayed for US before He sacrificed His life in His Passion. The Father has heard the prayer of the Son. Are we willing to give our lives for this prayer to be answered?
