The Passionists have served the Louisville community with faith and dedication since 1879. Generations of service in Louisville

The Passionists have been part of Louisville since 1879, when we first served at St. Cecilia’s Parish.

Later, we moved to a mansion on our current property.

As the community grew, the house was replaced by the monastery that opened in 1905 and still stands today.

The four columns from the mansion were repositioned at the portico of the new building: a symbol that the roots of the past would lead us in shaping the future. Within the year, the western portion of St. Paul of the Cross Province would become Holy Cross Province.

For generations, the Louisville monastery has been a center for Passionist life and formation, welcoming vowed members, novices, students and visitors from around the world.

Sacred Heart Retreat and Monastery – our “Ol’ Kentucky Home”

Over time, the building has been renovated to meet the changing needs of the community, especially to care for our senior members.

Major updates followed a tornado in 1974, a renovation in 1982 and another in 2009 to make the monastery more accessible and comfortable for senior Passionists. When needed, skilled care is available next door at Nazareth Home.

Thanks to generous supporters, we continue to preserve this historic home, ensuring it remains a place of prayer, community and hospitality.

Sacred Heart Retreat reflects the enduring Passionist mission in Louisville, rooted in the past and adapting for the future.
