Catholic Theological Union (CTU) in Chicago was founded in 1968 by a group of religious orders, including the Passionists, who wanted to collaborate in training ministers after the Second Vatican Council. The idea was to create a vibrant, academically strong and mission-focused school that welcomed men and women from many religious congregations and lay vocations.
Since its founding, CTU has been a vital partner in the formation of Passionist priests, brothers and laity.
Rooted in the rich tradition of Catholic theological education, CTU provides a vibrant, diverse and globally-minded environment where Passionists and others who share in the mission of proclaiming the Gospel prepare for lives of service, preaching and compassion.
Current University President, Fr. Enzo Del Brocco, CP, is the third Passionist priest to hold the position, following in the footsteps of Fr. Paul Bechtold, CP, and Fr. Don Senior, CP.
A Shared Mission
The Passionists of Holy Cross Province have long entrusted CTU with the academic and pastoral formation of those called to serve in the Passionist way of life. CTU’s mission to prepare effective leaders for the Church in the modern world aligns beautifully with the Passionist commitment to preach the memory of the Passion of Jesus Christ and to minister to the crucified of today.
“CTU is not only where we study theology—it’s where we deepen our call to live the Gospel with the heart of Christ crucified.”
