Reflection
Today’s reading from Matthew 13:47-53 is a parable in which Jesus tells us that at the end of times, everyone will be gathered like fish in a net and sorted as good or bad. It’s a simple story with graphic consequences. Live a righteous life and be among the good fish gathered and collected to be kept; live wickedly and be tossed into a fiery furnace.
There are quite a few stories we can reflect upon concerning the end of time. The parables of the sheep and goats, the ten virgins, talents given and weeds growing alongside wheat.
At the end of today’s gospel, Jesus speaks of scribes bringing forth new and old from his storeroom. What does this mean? I believe Jesus is calling us to consider both old and new writings. Study what has been handed down to us and explore the meanings and emotions of the writers. Dive as deep as you can into these stories and lessons and then go off for quiet meditation.
