There is something hopeful about the beginning of a school year. Fresh notebooks, new classrooms, familiar faces and new friendships all remind us that every year is another opportunity to grow.
Even for those of us who are long past our school days, the back to school season invites us to remember the teachers who believed in us, the lessons that shaped us and the people who helped us discover who God was calling us to become.
Forming Minds and Hearts
One of the things I appreciate most about Catholic education is that it has always aimed higher than academics alone. As Passionists, we see education as much more than preparing students for a career. We believe it is about forming the whole person: mind, heart and spirit.
Our schools strive to be communities of faith, compassion and transformation where every student is encouraged to discover their God-given gifts and develop a compassionate heart for the world.
A Legacy of Hope in Alabama
That commitment has been part of Holy Cross Province for nearly ninety years.
In 1937, answering Pope Pius XI’s call to serve the Black community in the United States, the Passionists came to Birmingham, Alabama. What began with a rented storefront at Tuxedo Junction soon became something remarkable. That humble space served as a church, rectory and school, laying the foundation for Holy Family Parish and a ministry that would shape generations.
I find it inspiring that our educational ministry began not with impressive buildings, but with a willingness to serve wherever there was a need. The Passionists saw children who deserved an education rooted in faith and dignity, and they responded with generosity and courage.
Over the years, classrooms gave way to permanent school buildings, clinics grew into hospitals and dedicated religious sisters, teachers and community leaders helped countless young people discover hope through faith and education. Holy Family High School, now Cristo Rey Birmingham Catholic High School, and Holy Family Catholic Academy continue that legacy today, providing excellent education rooted in Gospel values and the Passionist charism.
A Prayer for the New School Year
As another school year begins, I invite you to pause for a moment and remember someone who made a difference in your own education. Offer a prayer of gratitude for them, and then pray for those who are beginning a new year today.

As a new school year begins,
we ask your blessing on all students, teachers and families.
Fill each classroom with peace, each mind with curiosity
and each heart with kindness.
Be with those who feel nervous or uncertain.
Grant them courage, calm and confidence.
Guide teachers in their calling and parents in their support.
May this year be one of learning, growth and grace.

May God bless every student with curiosity, confidence and wisdom. May teachers, administrators and school staff be filled with patience, creativity and joy. May parents, grandparents and caregivers find strength as they support the children entrusted to their care.
Together, let us pray that this school year will be one of growth, friendship and faith, and that every classroom may become a place where hope is nurtured, compassion is practiced and Christ’s love is made known.
