Hope is necessary in this moment, especially for those who are marginalized and for those who are deeply worried about their future. Hope is essential—not because it puts us to sleep or helps us pretend there are no problems, but because it gives us the courage to move through them.

The only way to fight fear is with hope, because hope strengthens us. Hope does not mean being careless or ignoring reality. It does not mean being unaware of danger. Instead, hope gives us the courage to face fear directly and, in a sense, disconnect from its power.

A person of hope is not someone who has no fear, but someone who knows, I can overcome this fear, and who seeks the understanding needed to face it. Hope gives us the energy to step forward with clarity and purpose.

If I think of the first Christians, many of whom were persecuted, it was hope that drove them. And we are here today because of their hope.
