Christian watchfulness does not mean sitting and waiting anxiously but it means living faithfully every day.

We need to get in the habit of focusing on ourselves – the good we do for others, corporal and spiritual works of mercy, maintaining a strong prayer life and constantly learning about our faith.

I often wonder how Jesus or Paul the Apostle might revise their preaching if they were speaking to those of us in Western culture today.

In most Eucharist liturgies a Psalm is presented to us as response to the Scriptural readings.

We, too, are called to embrace the love shown to us from the Cross and the hope we are given through the Resurrection, in order to share God’s love with the world and help build up the kingdom, working for justice and making peace.

Her “yes” must become our yes: yes to compassion, yes to human dignity, yes to accompanying those who live in fear and have been forgotten.

Jesus responds: “Love God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.

Perhaps we hold on to our hardness not because we love it, but because it has been useful. It got us through something. It kept us standing when tenderness seemed like a luxury we could not afford.

Saint Paul of the Cross reminds us that God does not call us merely to discipline, but to conversion of heart—to return to love, honor, and trust.

True richness, as Jesus teaches, is found in discovering God as our greatest treasure.
