Dr. Annie Huey, Ph.D., explores the life and writings of Katherine Burton (1887-1969), a once-prominent, yet still important Catholic laywoman in the mid-twentieth century.
In addition to writing over forty-five biographies and histories of Catholic figures and Catholic religious orders, Burton’s monthly column in Sign Magazine entitled “Woman to Woman,” ran for an impressive thirty-six years.
Dr. Huey and Passionist Historian Fr. Rob Carbonneau, CP, examine the breadth of Burton’s work, her writing process, her relationship with Sign’s editors, and the advice she imparted to her large female readership on navigating the evolving roles and responsibilities of Catholic laywomen.
The longevity of her career reminds us that Katherine Burton remains an invaluable, untapped source for understanding the lives of U.S. Catholic women during this transformative era.
