Pausing to Begin Lent With Honest Hearts

Lent begins with honest reflection — pausing to notice where we are and how past Lenten seasons have shaped us through growth, struggle, companionship and grace.

At its heart, Lent is not about perfecting religious habits. It is about being changed by Christ’s dying and rising. The practices we take on are not goals in themselves, but signs of a deeper turning —one that draws us beyond self focus and into communion, justice and compassion.

Lent is not simply something to observe, but a journey to enter, personally and communally, as we walk toward the Cross and the promise of new life.

And before we move forward on the journey, it helps to pause and notice where we are right now.

Look honestly at your past Lenten experiences — the growth, the struggles, the people who strengthened you and even the moments that felt difficult or disappointing.

Take time to reflect on the questions below. Let them prepare your heart for the road ahead.

This is not a solitary path. Together, we are formed into a people of hope and faithful compassion.

And wherever you are starting from — hopeful, hesitant or searching — you are welcome here.

Let’s begin.

Reflection Questions

  • What has Lent meant in your life?
  • Who has walked it with you?
  • Where has it stretched you, strengthened you or even disappointed you?
