Parish Communities Unite for Severe Weather Awareness on Earth Day

St. Mary’s Passionist Parish and neighboring communities hosted a well-attended Severe Weather Awareness Day with a local meteorologist to help residents better prepare for increasing extreme weather.

“A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system. In recent decades this warming has been accompanied by a constant rise in the sea level and, it would appear, by an increase of extreme weather events…”

As we head into spring hurricane and storm season, members of the Social Action Ministry at St. Mary’s Passionist Parish in Birmingham, AL, asked, “How can we prepare ourselves and our neighbors for the increasing severe weather events that we are experiencing?”

Their answer: organize a “Severe Weather Awareness Day” with local meteorologist Jordan West, from Channel 13 News!

Many thanks to Jordan and St. Mary’s Social Action Ministry, chaired by John Meehan, who has been called the parish’s “conscience for environmental justice issues.” Our parishes and neighbors are now more weather aware and better prepared for extreme weather, thanks to all the great information and discussion.
