7 Signs You Might Need a Spiritual Retreat

Discover seven signs it may be time to step away from the busyness of everyday life and make space for rest, prayer and a deeper encounter with God.

Life gets busy. Between work, family, responsibilities and the constant pull of our phones, it can be difficult to find enough quiet to notice what is happening within us or to listen for God.

Sometimes we need more than a few quiet minutes. We need to step away.

A Passionist retreat creates space to rest, pray and encounter the love of God revealed in the Passion of Jesus.

Wondering whether it might be time for one? Here are seven signs.

1

You feel like you’re always rushing.

You move from one responsibility to the next, but rarely have time to stop and ask where you are going or what really matters.

Retreat interrupts that rhythm. It gives you permission to slow down, become still and simply be present with God.

Sometimes what we need most is not to accomplish something new, but to make room for the One who has been with us all along.”It is not enough to look at the cross, or wear it, we must carry it in the depth of our heart.”

2

Your prayer life feels dry or distant.

Maybe prayer once came naturally, but lately the words do not come. Perhaps you are distracted, uninspired or unsure how to begin.

That does not mean God is absent.

A retreat offers time for silence, Scripture and reflection without the usual distractions of daily life. You do not have to arrive feeling particularly prayerful. You only have to be willing to show up.

3

You’re carrying something heavy.

Grief. Worry. Disappointment. A difficult relationship. An uncertain future.

Some burdens cannot simply be put aside. Passionist spirituality invites us to bring them to Christ Crucified, who knows human suffering and remains close to those who suffer.

Retreat may not make your burden disappear, but it can remind you that you do not carry it alone.

4

You’re facing an important decision.

When we are surrounded by competing voices and everyday demands, it can be difficult to know which direction to take.

Retreat creates space for discernment.

Rather than demanding an immediate answer from God, we can become quiet enough to listen. What is stirring in your heart? What draws you toward greater love? Where are you experiencing peace?

Sometimes clarity begins with silence.

5

You’re taking care of everyone except yourself.

Caring for others is an expression of love. But continually giving without making time to rest and pray can leave us spiritually depleted.

Jesus himself withdrew from the crowds to spend time in prayer.

Retreat is not an escape from the people who need us. It can renew our ability to return to them with greater patience, compassion and attentiveness.

6

You’ve stopped noticing God in everyday life.

When our attention is pulled in a hundred directions, it can become harder to recognize God’s presence.

Retreat helps us practice paying attention again.

For St. Paul of the Cross, remembering the Passion of Jesus was a way of awakening the heart to the immense love of God. Stepping away for retreat can help us rediscover that love — and begin noticing God’s presence in Scripture, creation, other people and the ordinary moments of our lives.

7

Something inside you is saying, “Come away.”

You do not need to be exhausted, overwhelmed or facing a crisis to need a retreat.

Sometimes there is simply a desire for something deeper. You may be longing for silence, more time for prayer or a renewed relationship with God.

Pay attention to that longing.

It may be an invitation.

An Invitation to Step Away

A Passionist retreat invites us to bring whatever we are carrying to Christ — our struggles and gratitude, our questions and hopes — and to encounter the depth of God’s love revealed in his Passion.

If any of these signs feel familiar, perhaps this retreat season is your invitation to step away.

Come as you are. Become still. Remember the Passion.

And make room for God to meet you there.
