Reflection
In today’s readings, we hear first how Jeremiah tries to contain and repress burning messages in his heart. In the second reading of Romans, we are urged to be different than the popular trends of our times and to be transformed by the renewal of our minds to what is God’s will. Both seem to give credence to us behaving in ways looked upon as odd by others. This should give us confidence to go against popular trends if we are well-formed, as we hear next.
In our third reading, Peter boldly speaks out, imploring Jesus NOT to talk about what HE will experience in Jerusalem. Peter proclaims, “No such thing shall ever happen!”
Peter blurts out his feelings and speaks boldly, wanting to protect Jesus from suffering, pain and death. He is speaking from his heart. Who amongst us would not feel the same?
Jesus harshly responds to Peter, saying that he is acting like Satan and is an obstacle to His mission. We should not judge Peter too harshly, though, since he is still a student and not the teacher.
Jesus then calmly explains to us (his disciples) what we must do. Pick up our crosses, proclaim God’s greatness and live lives directed by His will.
Do I strive to live as a student? Do I speak without proper discernment? Do I set aside enough time to hear God’s will?
