Reflection
In today’s Gospel, Christ tells the parable of the seeds and the soil. It is one of those special parables that Jesus explicitly explains to His disciples. It is important to Him that they understand what He is saying.
Because Jesus’ explanation focuses on the ground that receives the seed, it is not surprising that we tend to focus on that as well. Of course, it is proper for us to reflect on this. The receptivity of one’s soul to God’s word should be a regular topic that a Christian examines in his or her life. However, in so doing, we can miss an important element of the parable, the seed itself. No matter what ground it ultimately falls on, the seed is being thrown.
This teaches us about the heart of God. He does not withhold His word from those who are not well-disposed or prepared to receive it. Likewise, we should not shy away from sharing the Gospel with others because they seem disinterested or even hostile to it. Every season is the right season to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ!
