Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene
“I sought him whom my heart loves.”
These words from the Song of Songs beautifully reveal the heart of today’s feast. St. Mary Magdalene is the woman who seeks, remains, encounters, and proclaims.
When many had left, Mary stayed. She remained near the Cross, and she remained near the empty tomb. Her love did not disappear in moments of darkness or uncertainty. With a faithful heart, she searched for Jesus, and in her tears she discovered that the One she was seeking was already calling her by name.
Jesus entrusted Mary Magdalene with the first announcement of the Resurrection: “I have seen the Lord.” Her witness reminds us that women have always carried a sacred place in the mission of the Church, loving deeply, serving faithfully, and bringing hope where others only see loss.
During this time of healing and recovery, Mary Magdalene invites me to embrace a different rhythm of discipleship: to listen more deeply, to trust more fully, and to recognize Christ’s presence even in the quiet and unexpected places of life.
She reminds me that our mission is not only found in what we do, but in how we love, remain, and witness God’s grace.
As a Passionist, I believe that staying close to the suffering of Christ allows us to discover the hope of the Resurrection. Like Mary Magdalene, may we continue seeking, loving, and proclaiming with our lives: “We have seen the Lord.”
