Hunter of Souls: Fr. Cedric Pisegna Reflects on St. Paul of the Cross

In this video reflection, Fr. Cedric Pisegna, CP, introduces us to the life and spirituality of St. Paul of the Cross, founder of the Passionist community, known as the “hunter of souls.”

Drawing from 1 Corinthians 1, Fr. Cedric Pisegna, CP, explains that the Passionists “preach Christ crucified,” proclaiming the cross as the ultimate sign of God’s wisdom, power, and love.

St. Paul of the Cross dedicated his life to spreading devotion to the Passion of Jesus, believing that “everything is to be found in the cross” — redemption, forgiveness and mercy. He founded the Passionists to live simply, pray deeply and reach out to people through preaching and compassion.

Fr. Cedric recounts how Paul’s vision of Mary in black sackcloth inspired him to create a community devoted to meditating on the Passion and helping others experience mystical union with Christ through suffering and prayer.

Fr. Cedric shares his own journey of encountering the Passionists during a mission trip in Mexico, where he was moved by their zeal and compassion. He emphasizes that Passionists continue St. Paul’s mission today by preaching parish missions, leading retreats and ministering to those who are suffering or marginalized. Our spirituality blends contemplation and action — prayer, then service.

Ultimately, Fr. Cedric calls us to “remain on the cross with Jesus,” to unite our own struggles with his, and to be “hunters of souls” who reach out in love. Love, he reminds us, “is ingenious.” Using modern media as a new form of mission, he invites us to embrace Christ’s Passion, support Catholic outreach and live passionately for God.
