Reflection:
Gird your loins and light your lamps and be…ready.
Luke 16:13
Let us set the scene for our gospel passage. It is midnight, and the servants are busy preparing for the return of their master. Their robes are hitched up around their waists so as not to impede their working and walking. Their lamps have been trimmed and burning so as to see the work to be done when the master returns. They are looking and waiting with eager anticipation to catch the first sign of the return of the master. These three elements: girded loins, lighted lamps and waiting hearts can serve us in our spirituality. (MacLaren’s Expositions, Bible Hub, (BibleHiub.com/Commentaries/Luke/12-35ntm)
First girded loins: Are we doing the preparations needed not to fall and trip in our spiritual lives? Are we reading scriptures daily? Doing 20 minutes of prayer each day? Frequenting the sacraments regularly? Second, our lamps are burning. We are becoming light in the darkness for others. We are living Christian lives by caring for the poor and being actively involved in our communities and local churches, being a source of light for others.
Third, waiting hearts. This means that we are active, patiently living our faith, believing and trusting the divine, and practicing gratitude on a consistent and regular basis. We are focused on personal and spiritual growth. If this was a test in spiritual preparation, would we pass the test?
Lord, send your Spirit more fully to love and live for you now and prepare for our eternal life to come.
