Saint Paul of the Cross gathered companions to live together and to proclaim the Gospel of
Christ to all. The first name he gave his community was “The Poor of Jesus.” This was to indicate that their lives were to be based on evangelical poverty, which he held to be so necessary if they were to observe the other evangelical counsels, to persevere in prayer, and to preach the Word of the Cross in season and out of season.
Moreover, he wanted them to live their lives like apostles. They were to foster and develop a deep spirit of prayer, penance, and solitude so that they could reach closer union with God and witness to His love.
Keenly aware of the evils that afflicted the people of his time, he never tired of insisting that the most effective remedy is the Passion of Jesus, “the greatest and most overwhelming work of God’s love.”
Recognizing in Saint Paul of the Cross the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church with her supreme authority approved our Congregation and its Rule, and entrusted us with a mission: to preach the Gospel of the Passion by our life and apostolate.
This mission still retains all its force and authenticity.

We in the Passionist family of Holy Cross Province are deeply aware that the Passion of Christ continues in this world.
We seek to nurture the seeds that have been planted in our hearts within community and by a way of life that helps us live more deeply into what “keeping alive the memory of the Passion” means for each of us and for all of us together as the Passionist family.
We choose to walk the path that Paul of the Cross did, with companions, prayerfully reflecting on how the Rule that Paul wrote in 1721, and the Constitutions appended in 1984, can guide and shape our lives as we come to understand more deeply what it means to be a Passionist today.
First and foremost, members of the Passionist family commit to keeping alive the memory of the Passion of Christ. This vow is personal, communal and apostolic.
We commit to sharing in the joys and sorrows of our contemporaries. We understand that Christ’s Passion and death are “no mere historical events. They are ever-present realities to people in the world of today, ‘crucified’ as they are by injustice, by the lack of a deep respect for human life, and by a hungry yearning for peace, truth, and the fullness of human existence” (65, Constitutions).
We take part in this apostolate, each of us, according to our gifts, resources and ministries.
San Pablo de la Cruz reunió compañeros que viviesen en común para anunciar el evangelio de Cristo a los hombres.
Desde el principio los llamó “Los pobres de Jesús”, porque su vida debía fundarse en la pobreza evangélica, tan necesaria para observar los otros consejos evangélicos, para perseverar en la oración y para anunciar continuamente la Palabra de la Cruz. Quiso que los mismos compañeros siguieran un estilo de vida “a la manera de los Apóstoles”, y fomentasen un profundo espíritu de oración, de penitencia y de soledad, por el que alcanzasen una unión más íntima con Dios y fuesen testigos de su amor.
Con clara visión de los males de su tiempo, proclamó incansablemente que la Pasión de Jesucristo,”la obra más grande y admirable del divino amor”, es el remedio más eficaz.
La Iglesia, habiendo reconocido la acción del Espíritu Santo en San Pablo de la Cruz, aprobó con su autoridad suprema nuestra Congregación y sus Reglas, para la misión de anunciar el Evangelio de la Pasión con la vida y el apostolado.
Esta misión conserva siempre toda su fuerza y validez.

Como miembros de la Familia Pasionista de la Provincia Santa Cruz, somos profundamente
conscientes de que la Pasión de Cristo continúa expresándose en nuestro mundo. Queremos
nutrir esa semilla de la Memoria Passionis, que ha echado raíces en nuestros corazones, viviendo en una comunidad de vida y viviendo más profundamente lo que significa “mantener viva la memoria de la Pasión” para cada uno de nosotros y para todos nosotros juntos como la Familia Pasionista. Elegimos seguir el camino que siguió Pablo de la Cruz con sus compañeros. Además, por reflexion y en oración sobre la Regla que Pablo escribió en 1721 y las Constituciones Pasionistas, queremos entender más profundamente lo que significa ser un Pasionista hoy, para dar forma a nuestras vidas según El Camino Pasionista.
Ante todo, los miembros de la Familia Pasionista se comprometen a mantener viva
la memoria de la Pasión de Cristo. Este compromiso, ya sea por voto o promesa, es
personal, comunitario, y apostólico. Nos comprometemos a compartir las alegrías y
tristezas de nuestros contemporáneos. Sabemos que anunciamos “su pasión y muerte, no sólo
como acontecimiento histórico pasado, sino como realidad, ciertamente presente, en la vida
de los hombres que «hoy son crucificados» por la injusticia, por la ausencia de un sentido profundo de la vida humana, y por el hambre de paz, de verdad y de vida” (Constituciones, 65). Cada uno de nosotros participa en este apostolado según nuestros dones, recursos, y ministerios.
