A Ministry of Presence

Today’s Lenten reflection is from Theresa Secord on the meaning of almsgiving, grounded in a personal experience of faith.

Almsgiving for me is not simply a Lenten practice but a way of life I have come to call a Ministry of Presence.

One of the ways I practice almsgiving is in following Jesus’ call as found in Matthew 25:36, for I was in prison… and you visited me.

Each month I visit the local women’s prison, where I give my time and heart through prayer, lectio divina, and deep listening to the stories, struggles, and hopes of the women there.

Within the barbed wire and concrete, sacred ground is formed as dreams are spoken and faith is shared.

This ministry humbles me and continually reshapes me as a disciple of Jesus.

Recently, we celebrated with K as she prepared for release after two and a half years, filled with both joy and anxiety as she looked forward to reuniting with her infant son. We prayed over her and entrusted her future to God with gratitude.

Weeks later, we rejoiced again to learn that she is reunited with her child, working, settled, and growing in faith—living signs of healing and grace.
