7 Inspiring St. Gemma Quotes on Suffering, Love and Holiness

These seven powerful quotes from St. Gemma Galgani offer inspiration and insight into the spirituality of a beloved Passionist saint whose life was rooted in love for Jesus Crucified.

St. Gemma Galgani, known as the “Flower of Lucca,” was a young Italian mystic whose life was marked by profound devotion to Jesus and deep union with His Passion.

St. Gemma Galgani, Lay Passionist

Born in 1878, Gemma experienced great suffering from an early age through illness, poverty and the loss of her family, yet she became known for extraordinary spiritual experiences, including visions of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her guardian angel. Though she never formally entered the Passionist order, she longed to become a Passionist nun and considered herself spiritually united to the congregation throughout her life.

Because of her intense meditation on the suffering and love of Christ, St. Gemma became one of the most beloved saints of the Passionist family. Her spirituality reflects the heart of the Passionist charism: finding hope, love, and transformation in the Passion of Jesus.

Today, Passionists around the world honor her as a spiritual daughter of St. Paul of the Cross and a witness to redemptive suffering.

Though St. Gemma’s feast day is celebrated universally on April 11, the Passionists observe her feast on May 16. Because April 11 often falls during Holy Week or Easter, May 16 — near the anniversary of her beatification on May 14 — allows the Passionist family to celebrate her properly.

These seven quotes from St. Gemma Galgani reveal the heart of a young saint who embraced the cross not with despair, but with deep love, joyful sacrifice, and complete surrender to Jesus.

1

“It is not enough to look at the cross, or wear it, we must carry it in the depth of our heart.”

2

“Often I seem to be alone but really I have Jesus as a companion.”

3

“I seem to see and feel myself a Passionist every day.”

4

“Nothing more remains to me, Jesus, I surrender my poor soul to you – Jesus.”

5

“It is by suffering that one learns to love.”

6

“I shun all the pleasures of life, and I happen on one so great that I am utterly happy.”

7

“I am the fruit of your Passion, Jesus, born of your wounds. I no longer possess anything; you have stolen my heart.”
