Reflection
…and I will make it known that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.
-John 17:26
All of us are familiar with famous coaches, artists, musicians, as they are leaving their professions or shortly before their deaths, they share with us advice on to how to be successful and winners. They give us the basic standards to which they have adhered and developed to perfection. Today, we hear the conclusion of Jesus’ prayer at the “Last Supper”. Jesus prays for his disciples but also for all those who will believe in Jesus as a result of the preaching of his disciples. He is praying for you and me and how we should live in harmony as one.
Jesus prays for us to come together as one and not live as isolated individuals. Jesus sees us as created, unique, precious, equal persons and created in the image and likeness of God. Jesus does not see us as separate and apart from one another. “Jesus’ prayer calls us to find common ground, to gather, to unite and to express our love for him through love for each other.”

I invite you to read today’s gospel in a prayerful manner, reflecting on the love relationship between the Father and the Son. Let us examine all of our relationships in light of the Father’s and Son’s love for each other. Today, let us pray for love, unity and peace in our world, among world leaders, in our local communities and churches, synagogues and mosques, and in all of our relationships.
Lord, please send your spirit to unite us in love and to live in unity and peace.
