St. Paul of the Cross devoted his life to helping people recognize God’s love in the Passion of Jesus.
As we celebrate his feast on October 20 in the United States and October 19 on the Church’s global calendar, here are six things to know about the man whose spirituality continues to inspire the Passionist Family.
He Founded the Passionists
Born in Italy in 1694, Paul felt called to gather a community centered on the Passion of Jesus. The Congregation of the Passion received papal approval in 1741. Prayer, community life and preaching were central to its mission of helping people encounter God’s love.
Now more than three centuries after Paul’s birth, there are over 1,750 Passionists serving in 57 countries, plus congregations of Passionists nuns and sisters.

He Saw the Cross as an Expression of God’s Love
For Paul, contemplating the Passion meant discovering how deeply God loves us. Jesus’ willingness to enter human suffering revealed a love that stays close through pain and loss. This understanding shaped Paul’s prayer and the message he shared with others.
Today, that same understanding invites us to bring our struggles to God, trusting that we are loved even when life feels uncertain.

Prayer Was at the Heart of His Life
Paul made time for silence and contemplation. His ministry grew from a life rooted in prayer.
His example reminds us to pause amid our own responsibilities. A few quiet minutes with a Gospel passage or an honest conversation with God can help us become more attentive to God’s presence and the needs of others.

He Guided People From Many Walks of Life
Paul wrote thousands of letters offering spiritual guidance to laypeople, priests and religious. His concern reached beyond the community he founded.
The spirituality he shared can shape our lives wherever we are: raising a family, caring for a loved one, working, volunteering or seeking a deeper relationship with God.

He Offered Hope to People Who Were Suffering
Through his preaching and spiritual guidance, Paul helped people find strength and hope in the Passion of Christ.
His message remains meaningful when life takes an unexpected turn. We can bring grief, disappointment and unanswered questions to prayer. We can also help others experience God’s care by listening, offering practical help and staying beside them.

His Spirituality is Something We Can Practice Today
Paul’s focus on Christ Crucified continues to inspire the Passionist Family’s prayer and service to those who suffer.
We carry that spirit forward when we notice someone who feels forgotten, respond patiently in a difficult moment or make time for a person who needs support.
His feast invites each of us to ask: How can I help someone experience God’s love today?
