St. Paul of the Cross: A Love That Gives Us Hope

In honor of St. Paul of the Cross’s feast, Fr. Mike Higgins, CP, reflects on finding hope in God’s love, making room for prayer and bringing compassion to those who suffer today.

Each year, we celebrate the feast of St. Paul of the Cross on October 20 in the United States and October 19 on the Church’s global calendar.

As we honor the founder of the Passionists, we give thanks for a spiritual path that continues to help us recognize God’s presence, respond with compassion and find hope in difficult times.

Finding Love at the Foot of the Cross

At the heart of Paul’s spirituality was a deep awareness of God’s love revealed in the Passion of Jesus. In prayer before the Cross, he encountered a love that enters fully into human suffering. He devoted his life to helping others discover that love through prayer, preaching and spiritual guidance.

His invitation speaks to the questions we carry today.

Where is God when someone we love is hurting?

How do we keep going when the future feels uncertain?

What happens to our faith when life does not unfold as we hoped?

The Passion of Jesus gives us a place to bring those questions. Christ knows sorrow, fear, rejection and loss. We can approach him with our whole lives, trusting that we are heard and loved even when answers are slow to come.

Hope When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn

A diagnosis, a broken relationship, the loss of meaningful work or the death of someone dear can change the life we imagined. In those moments, hope may feel far away.

The spirituality Paul shared invites us to trust that God remains close. We do not have to understand everything before we can pray. We can begin with whatever is in our hearts: sadness, anger, gratitude or simply the desire to feel less alone.

The Cross and Resurrection remind us that suffering does not have the final word. Hope can begin quietly, in the strength to face another day, the kindness of someone who stays beside us or the courage to accept help. Even in uncertainty, love can open a way forward.

Making Room for God in Daily Life

Paul’s life of prayer reminds us to make room to listen. Our days are often crowded with responsibilities, messages and worries. A few moments of quiet can help us notice what is happening within us and become more aware of God’s presence.

We might sit with a Gospel passage, speak honestly to Jesus or pause before beginning the day. We might ask: Where have I received love? What am I carrying that I need to place in God’s hands? Who needs my attention?

These small practices can shape how we live. Prayer helps us respond with greater patience, recognize our need for forgiveness and meet others with a more open heart.

Carrying Compassion Into the World

Keeping alive the memory of Christ’s Passion asks us to draw near to people who suffer today. It invites us to notice the grief behind a familiar face, the exhaustion of a caregiver or the loneliness of someone who feels forgotten.

Compassion takes shape through ordinary actions: a phone call, a shared meal, a patient conversation or an offer of practical help. It also moves us to address the conditions that cause suffering, support families facing hunger, defend human dignity and care for our common home.

We can live this spirituality in our homes, workplaces, parishes and neighborhoods. Each of us has opportunities to help someone experience the love Paul spent his life sharing.

An Invitation We Can Live Today

The spiritual path St. Paul of the Cross opened continues through the Passionist Family and through all who allow Christ’s love to shape their lives. His feast invites us to receive that love more deeply and consider how we can share it.

Who needs us to stay beside them? Where might we bring encouragement? What small act of compassion is possible today?

As we honor St. Paul of the Cross, may we find renewed trust in the God who walks with us. May our prayer make us more attentive to others and may the hope we carry become a gift we share.

May the Passion of Jesus Christ be always in our hearts!
