Integrity of heart allows the Kingdom of God to take root within us, where mercy and justice meet.

Reflection

Integrity of Heart

In today’s first reading, we meet Eleazar, an elderly scribe whose faith is tested. Offered a way to save his life through deception, he refuses, choosing instead to die rather than betray God’s law. His courage flows not from pride, but from integrity — the deep conviction that faithfulness to God is worth more than life itself. His example becomes a lasting witness for generations who would face their own trials.

The story of Zacchaeus Luke’s Gospel presents another kind of courage — the humility to change. A wealthy tax collector despised by his community, Zacchaeus climbs a tree simply to see Jesus. When Jesus calls him down and enters his home, Zacchaeus’ heart is transformed. He promises to repay what he has stolen and to give generously to the poor. Like Eleazar, he chooses integrity, returning to right relationship with God and others.

Both men remind us that discipleship requires courage and honesty.

Faith is not only belief but the willingness to let God’s truth reshape our lives.

Integrity of heart allows the Kingdom of God to take root within us, where mercy and justice meet.
