No one is truly lost when the Lord is the compass of our lives. Nothing can drown us if we hold on to Him.

God, the Compass of Our Lives

A compass is an instrument used for navigation and orientation. It shows direction and helps us reach where we want to go. A compass guides us through unknown terrain, keeps us from getting lost, and helps us maintain focus. In life too, we need a compass, something that keeps us moving in a clearly defined direction.

The readings today invite us to reflect on what truly guides our lives. In the Gospel, we see Jesus as a person fully in control of His life because He lives in deep union with His Father. The Father is the compass of Jesus’ life. Everything He does flows from that relationship.

Because Jesus is guided by the Father, He in turn becomes the compass for His disciples, leading them safely through confusion and fear.

The Gospel recounts the incident of Jesus walking on the water. The disciples are in a boat, caught in strong winds and rough waves. This event follows the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves, in which Jesus fed a great crowd. The people were amazed and excited. They saw someone who could provide them with food, security, and strength. But Jesus knew that their excitement was shallow. They were ready to make Him king for material reasons, without understanding the deeper meaning of His mission. So, He withdrew to the mountain to be alone with the Father. He returned to the source of His direction, the true compass of His life.

Meanwhile, the disciples struggled in the storm. The sea was rough, the winds were strong, and fear overwhelmed them. They had lost their sense of direction. Anxiety filled their hearts. But into this chaos, Jesus comes walking on the water.

The first reading from Acts shows the early Church learning this same lesson. Faced with confusion and complaints, the apostles turn to prayer and discernment. Instead of reacting in panic, they allow God to guide them. By choosing servants filled with the Spirit, they ensure that the mission continues with clarity and unity. Even in practical matters, they rely on God as their compass.

No one is truly lost when the Lord is the compass of our lives. Nothing can drown us if we hold on to Him. Storms will come, confusion will arise, and fears may surface. But when Christ shows us our direction, we are never without hope. Are we ready to let God be the compass of our lives?

In prayer, in faithfulness, and in trust, let us remain open to the One who alone can guide us safely. When we allow the Lord to lead us, we discover that even in the darkest storms, we are never lost.
