We see a mother holding her child and living with the weight of what has been revealed.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

Reflection

We begin the new year quietly, by returning once more to Bethlehem and seeing Mary in the stable.

Luke tells us that after the shepherds left, Mary “kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.” The stable is calmer now. The excitement has faded.

We see a mother holding her child and living with the weight of what has been revealed.

Eight days later, the child is named Jesus, which in Mary’s own language is Yeshua, meaning “The Lord saves.” Mary would have understood that meaning immediately. It was a familiar name, rooted in Israel’s faith and hope.

Yet understanding the meaning of the name is not the same as understanding how it will unfold. Mary does not yet know what this salvation will look like. She does not know the road ahead, only that God has entered her life in a way that cannot be undone. So, she does what faith often requires. She ponders. She holds the mystery rather than solving it.

So here we are on January 1. A new year has been named, but it has not yet revealed its story.

We carry hopes, questions, and memories from the year behind us. Like Mary, we stand at a threshold. We know enough to trust, but not enough to control what comes next.

As this year begins, may we learn from Mary how to carry the mystery entrusted to us. She is our model of discipleship because she begins without knowing where the path will lead, yet she walks it faithfully. May we move into this new year confident that the God who saves is already at work in us and around us.
