Yet like Peter, we are called to walk back down into the valley, trusting that the voice we heard, however brief or faint, is enough to take the next step.

Reflection

Recently, we had a very dense morning fog with extremely limited visibility. Even the houses across the street were barely visible. Driving to an early morning appointment on my usual route, nothing was clear until I was only a few feet away from traffic lights, street signs, and the familiar landscapes. Very little felt certain that morning. It was a reminder of how disorienting it is to move forward when we cannot see what lies ahead.

I knew the road. I had driven it hundreds of times. But knowing the route and seeing the way are not the same thing. Abraham, Timothy, and Peter travel their faith journeys in today’s readings while uncertain of where God is leading them and what that path will require.

God tells Abraham, “Go forth…to a land I will show you.” Imagine starting out on a journey without knowing the destination, how long the travel will take, or what awaits you when you arrive. In a remarkable act of trust, Abraham lets go of the certainty of his homeland and places his future in God’s hands.

Peter, by contrast, longs for certainty. In Matthew 16, he resists Jesus’ prediction of his suffering and death.

Paul, writing to Timothy, urges him not to be ashamed of the Gospel, even when it brings hardship. Faith does not spare Timothy from suffering, but it assures him that grace is already at work within him, sustaining him through it.

Abraham, Timothy and Peter are asked to move forward without the guarantees of place, of understanding, or of comfort. We may recognize that same desire for clarity in ourselves. Yet like Peter, we are called to walk back down into the valley, trusting that the voice we heard, however brief or faint, is enough to take the next step.

Lord, when we long for certainty, give us trust instead.
When the vision fades, remain with us.
Lead us through the fog, and teach us to follow you, even when we cannot see where the road leads us.
